A United States Army special forces soldier has been arrested and charged after allegations emerged that he used classified military information to profit from betting markets tied to the removal of Venezuela’s former leader, Nicolás Maduro.
According to the US Department of Justice (DOJ), the soldier, identified as Gannon Ken Van Dyke, allegedly placed trades on a cryptocurrency-based prediction platform, Polymarket, while possessing nonpublic intelligence related to a sensitive military operation.
Authorities say Van Dyke earned more than $409,000 (approximately £303,702) from bets on the timing and outcome of a classified mission reportedly known as Operation Absolute Resolve.
Allegations of Insider Trading Using Classified Intelligence
Prosecutors claim the accused created a Polymarket account in late December 2025 and began trading on markets linked to Venezuela and Nicolás Maduro. At the time, he was allegedly involved in planning activities connected to the operation and had access to restricted government information.
The DOJ described the actions as a serious breach of trust, stating that the soldier used confidential intelligence “for personal financial gain,” which violates federal law and military regulations.
Officials also noted that service members are required to sign strict nondisclosure agreements prohibiting the sharing or misuse of classified operational data.
Operation Linked to Maduro Capture
Reports indicate that US forces conducted a nighttime raid on 3 January, during which Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were detained at their residence in Caracas. They were later transferred to New York to face allegations related to weapons and drug offenses, which they deny.
Investigators believe Van Dyke placed wagers not only on the political outcome but also on operational timing details that had not yet been made public.
Response From Authorities and Platforms
Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized that military personnel are entrusted with sensitive intelligence strictly for operational purposes, not personal enrichment.
He stated that misuse of classified information undermines national security and violates federal law.
The US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jay Clayton, also warned that emerging prediction markets cannot be treated as loopholes for insider trading or exploitation of confidential information.
Polymarket, the platform used in the alleged trades, said it cooperated fully with investigators after detecting suspicious activity.
In a public statement, the company noted that it had reported the user to authorities and reaffirmed that insider trading is not tolerated on its platform.
Legal Charges Filed
Van Dyke now faces multiple federal charges, including:
- Unauthorized use of government information
- Theft of nonpublic intelligence
- Wire fraud
- Commodities fraud
- Illegal financial transactions
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has also filed a separate civil complaint against him.
If convicted, he could face significant prison time and financial penalties.
Growing Concerns Over Prediction Markets
The case has reignited debate in Washington over the rise of prediction markets—online platforms where users bet on real-world political and military outcomes.
President Donald Trump, when asked about the matter during a separate engagement, said he was not previously aware of the case but expressed concern about betting platforms being used in sensitive geopolitical contexts.
He remarked that global markets are increasingly resembling “a casino,” adding that he is “not in favour of such practices.”
Conclusion
The case highlights growing tensions between modern digital betting platforms and national security laws, especially as prediction markets expand into politically sensitive events.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, and further details may emerge as the case proceeds in federal court.
🙏 Reflection (Bible Verse)
In a world where power, secrecy, and wealth often collide, Scripture reminds us of the importance of integrity and contentment in all things.
“For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.” – 1 Timothy 6:10
This situation serves as a reminder of how easily trust can be compromised when personal gain overrides responsibility and ethical conduct.
🙏 Short Prayer
Lord God,
We ask for wisdom, honesty, and integrity in all positions of authority and service. Protect those entrusted with sensitive responsibilities and guide them away from temptation. Let truth and justice prevail, and help us to walk in righteousness in all that we do.
Amen.
